Gasoline Prices Ups and Downs

Gasoline prices in Costa Rica are controlled and set by the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep), which on the request of state refinery, the Refinadora Costarricense de Petroleo SA (Recope), monthly review gasoline prices and fix the price.

The Aresep takes into consideration the Recope request, analyzes the current prices of crude oil on international markets and then holds a public hearings before making a decision.

Once the decision is made, it is announced and then must be published in the official government publication, La Gaceta, and prices take effect at the pumps the following day.

The confusion comes when, earlier this month the Aresep approved a hike and yesterday announced a round of price changes it is considering for April, which will not be approved for weeks to come.

The price of gasoline takes of ¢52 colones for a litre of super, ¢45 for regular plus and a drop of ¢20 colones for diesel, on Friday (March 20), as the notice is scheduled to be published on Thursday.

Meanwhile news of a reduction of ¢29 colones for a litre of diesel and ¢3 for super is only in the discussion stage.

So, to make things crystal clear, the following are the current and new prices changes approved:

- a litre of super gasoline sells today for ¢435 and increases to ¢487 on Friday

- a litre of regular gasoline sells today for ¢429 and increases to ¢474 on Friday

- a litre of diesel sells today for ¢435 and will drop to ¢415 on Friday
