Soldiers to Guard Salvadorian Elections
San Salvador - The Salvadorian army will
deploy two thousand troops as part of the
security plan announced today by authorities
to guard Sunday´s elections.
Military forces will participate in joint
patrols with the Civil National Police (PNC)
which will deploy 17,700 agents to keep
order, before, during and after the polls,
said the Minister of Public Security and
Justice, Rene Figueroa.
The joint plan will include also 921
students of the National Public Security
Academy and soldiers from the reserve.
PNC director, Jose Luis Tobar, said the
police and army forces will be deployed in
the areas near the polling stations, in the
roads and border checkpoints.
During the last days there have been
persistent denunciations on the entrance of
citizens from Nicaragua, Honduras, and El
Salvador with the purpose of voting in favor
of the government party, the Alianza
Republicana Nacionalista (ARENA).
The election campaign, which officially
concluded midnight Wednesday, has been
characterized by a high level of violence
and confrontations.
Over four million 226 thousand persons are
summoned to vote on Sunday for the next
president, between the Frente Farabundo
Marti para la Liberacion Nacional (FMLN)
represented by Mauricio Funes, and the ARENA
candidate, Rodrigo Ávila. |
