Nicaragua to
Host Event on Renewable Energy
Managua - Nicaragua will host a
regional meeting on Renewable Energy in
Central America from March 18-20, informed
today Emilio Rappaccioli, Minister of Energy
and Mines.
The meeting, called 13th Regional Forum:
“Renewable Energy in Isolated Rural
Locations in Central America,” is
co-sponsored by Finland, Austria and the
Ministry of the Environment and Natural
Resources, among others.
According to Rappaccioli, concrete efforts
are being made in this direction because
renewable energy sources have a strategic
importance in the countries of the region,
as they allow to reduce dependency on
imported fossil fuels, among other
advantages.
One of the objectives of the meeting is to
convey the advantages of energy to poor
isolated rural communities.
In that sense, the states of the area have
the support of the Central American Alliance
in Energy and the Environment (AEA), entity
which according to Markku Nurmi, of the
Finnish Ministry of the Environment, has 177
projects approved for the region, of these
24 in Nicaragua, with a budget of around 10
million dollars.
The AEA carries out initiatives linked to
the use of renewable resources as
mini-hydroelectric plants, solar and eolic
energy, from Belize to Panama in low-income
indian and rural communities.
In the case of Nicaragua, according to the
Minister of the Environment and Natural
Resources, Juana Arguenal, the policy is to
incentivate the use of these projects to
change the energy balance of these places
from the year 2010.
Companies from Austria and Finland will
attend the meeting and present their
products and technologies applied to the use
of these energy sources. |
