Taiwan Makes Strong Showing at Panama Trade Exhibition

Panama  - The Taiwan pavilion at this year's Expocomer trade exhibition in Panama was the second largest and most popular, according to a statement issued by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) Saturday.

Expocomer, which was held in Panama City March 4-7 at the Atlapa Convention Center, presented a key opportunity for Taiwanese companies looking to penetrate the Caribbean, Central American, and South American markets.

Taiwanese products such as Giant bicycles, desktop computers, mini notebooks, digital cameras, portable disks, massage chairs and franz porcelain were among the favorites at the exhibition, said TAITRA.

Expocomer 2009 was organized by the Panamanian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (CCIAP) to present Panama as a worldwide platform for distribution and business negotiation, based on its strong international financial center, use of the U.S. dollar as currency, and its well-developed port logistics.

However, CCIAP said there was a 26 percent drop in the number of participating countries this year compared to last year, due to the global economic crisis.

According to CCIAP, around 16,000 businesspeople from 35 nations attended Expocomer 2008, and transactions amounting to US$130 million were recorded. The 2008 show also generated US$39 million in tourism for Panama. The major exhibitors were from Taiwan, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, France, Hong Kong, South Korea, Spain, and the United States.
