Puente de la Amistad In Critical Condition

Vandalism and lack of maintenance are rapidly sinking the Puente de la Amistad - the Friendship Bridge - built by the government of Taiwan and donated to Costa Rica in 2003, that links directly to the Nicoya Peninsula.

For that a group from the Chinese colony of Cañas and Nicoya has closed ranks to save the bridge.

The us$27 million dollar bridge has gone virtually uncared for some years. Vandals have even removed many of the decorative light fixtures over the bridge, traffic and other signage, sprayed graffiti on many surfaces and even taken a bench located near the bridge.

Lately, vandals have taken to removing barriers and bolts used to support the bridge.

The Chine-Costarrican associations say that lack of maintenance by transport authorities is greatly reducing the life of the bridge as well.

The bridge was built whe Taiwan was an ally of Costa Rica before it diplomatic relations were cut off by Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, in favour of relations with China in 2006.
