Cuba Reduces Energy Consumption

Havana - Cuba's energy authorities have reduced 18,000 tons of fuel destined to power generation without blackouts, Granma newspaper reported Tuesday.

Electricity Company official Ricardo Gonzalez confirmed the reduction regarding the increasing consumption in April and the first two weeks in May.

Such equivalent fuel economy, reached thanks to a national energy saving, made blackout program to people unnecessary.

Gonzalez warned on the imminent vacation months, July and August, with high temperatures and consumption of fans, air conditionings and refrigeration.

Inspectors have detected nearly 1,500 frauds in the residential sector in June, and 128 labor places are without electricity for not fulfilling consumption plan.

Cuba has implemented a national energy-saving drive to compensate an over-consumption higher to 40,000 tons of fuel in the first four months of this year.
