Latin America, a Main Source of Qualified Labuor
Caracas - Latin America and the Caribbean
is the region with the highest relative growth of
qualified labor, who left for more developed
countries in 1990-2007, an official source said.
Imagen activa Consultant of the Latin America and
Caribbean Economic System (SELA), Fernando Lozano,
explained in a SELA meeting that this percentage
represents an increase of 155 percent (from 1.9
million of qualified immigrants in 1990 to 4.9
million in 2007).
In the presentation of the document Emigration of
Qualified Human Resources from Latin American and
Caribbean Countries: Contemporary Trends and
Prospects, the expert said that from this figure,
4.1 million went to the United States.
He said a characteristic of qualifies emigration in
the continent is the most workers come from tiny
countries; therefore, the Caribbean region has the
most marked indexes in this regard.
According to Lozano, also a professor of the
National Autonomous University of Mexico, in only 12
countries of the subregion more than 60 percent of
their qualified labor live abroad, and only in five
countries 80-90 percent live abroad. |
