Homosexual
Wants To Be First Declared Gay Legislator
The head of the Movimiento Diversidad,
Abelardo Araya, wants to be a legislator.
Araya is gay and says he wants to be the
first gay, at least first declared gay,
elected to the legislature to fight for the
rights of homosexuals.
Araya confirmed his political intentions to
the national assembly of the Partido Frente
Amplio, which is headed by legislator, José
Merino del Río.
The wannabe legislator has been active in
politics for the last four years fighting
for gay rights and is a firm supporter of
the legislative bill "Ley de Sociedades de
Convivencia", which is making its way
through the legislative process, currenlty
being studied by the Comisión de Derechos
Humanos del Congreso (legislative human
rights commission).
The Movimiento Diversidad groups all
homosexuals, lesbians and transgenders.
Araya has headed the group with conviction
and assures that he has the support of the
Frente Amplio and to be a party candidate
for a legsilative seat.
"This would be something of an historic
action and more against traditional
politics", said Araya.
