A Million More Jobless in Latin America
Santiago de Chile, - Over a million Latin
American and Caribbean people are jobless after the
first quarter of 2009, ILO and ECLAC jointly
reported Thursday in Santiago de Chile.
Unemployment rates in Latin America and the
Caribbean topped 0.6 percentage points in that
period in relation to the same in 2008, an increase
that shows the negative effect of the international
crisis on the labor markets of the region.
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the
Caribbean, ECLAC and the International Labor
Organization, ILO reported the number based on nine
countries in the region: 8.5 of unemployment rates
(in 2008 first quarter was 7.9 percent).
The joint report indicates that urban unemployment
rates are prone to increase between an 8.7 and 9.1
percent. |
