El Salvador: Plan for the Elderly

San Salvador - The newly-elected government of El Salvador announced the implementation of a national plan for adults over 70 years old, who live in poor areas and have no retirement pensions.

Those people will be given a voucher a month, aimed at guaranteeing access to food and other basic necessities.

This plan will be implemented throughout 2009, the president of the Fund for Social Investment and Local Development, Hector Silva, told media.

Providing assistance to older adults is among the objectives included in the presidential campaign carried out by El Salvador President Mauricio Funes, who assumed power as Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) candidate.

Funes promised at his inauguration day on June 1, to favor the poor sector and announced the upcoming implementation of a national plan that includes the reinsertion of 100,000 new jobs to stabilize the economy and alleviate the bad effects of the international economic crisis.
