Completely Closed Off For Weekend Repair
Work
The Autopista General Cañas is an important
and major route between San José and
Alajuela, but it is also suffering from the
lack of preventive maintenance, especially
when it comes to its bridges and in
particular the Virilla and Juan Pablo II
bridges.
This week the General Cañas has become a
major headache for drivers as work crews
carry out emergency repair to both bridges,
closing down the highway partially and
completely in the San José-Alajuela
direction.
For days, beginning at 10pm, the General
Cañas has been completely closed off at the
Virilla bridge to replace the metal plates
to tap up the holes on the bridge.
At the Juan Pablo II bridge in La Uruca,
work crews have closed off the right lane,
causing tremendous traffic congestion,
backing up all the way to the Corobici. The
work on that bridge is being carried out
during the day.
A such, Benjamín Sandino, director de
Conservación Vial de Consejo Nacional de
Vialidad (Conavi), announced Wednesday that
the autopista will be completely closed off
from 12:01am Saturday to 5am Monday from the
Juan Pablo II to the Virilla bridge.
Traffic to Alajuela will be redirected
through La Uruca, Pozuelo to Jardines de
Recuerdo in Lagunilla, Heredia and then left
at the Riteve station that leads to the
General Cañas at the Castella intersection
(west of Cariari).
Alajuela-San José traffic will not be
interrupted.
