Paraguay Congress Works to Avoid Coups
Asuncion - Paraguayan legislators are currently
working to elaborate a clause to ratify respect and
acknowledgement among the State powers, to avoid a
military coup as that perpetrated in Honduras.
The first Democratic Agreement bill will be
presented on Wednesday to all the group leaders,
which will encourage their fellow party members to
debate and contribute proposals, National Congress
leader Miguel Carrizosa explained.
The clause seeks to establish a series of aspects,
related to social, economic and judicial areas, the
congressman said.
He also said they have planned to present it to
President Fernando Lugo, before August, for
approval.
They are also analyzing if involving the Judiciary,
the Paraguayan congressional leader said.
The text core is a commitment to respect for the
Constitution and the democratic institutions, a
necessary issue, due to the international situation.
"We would not like our democracy to be jeopardized,"
said the Senate president.
"It is time for Paraguay to have a spinal cord,"
said Carrizosa.
The Paraguayan government condemned the military
coup against legitimate Honduran President Manuel
Zelaya, and is working for returning
constitutionality to that Central American nation.
Lugo has warned that what happened in that country
could happen in other continental territories, if a
firm measure against the de facto government is not
taken. |
