To Consider Offering Asylum to Zelaya
Mexico City - Mexico will
consider offering asylum to ousted Honduran
President Manuel Zelaya if he asks for this,
a Mexican official said here on Monday.
Mexico will raise the topic on Honduras at
the meeting of the Organization of American
States (OAS) and the United Nations, Deputy
Foreign Minister Lourdes Aranda Bezaury
said.
Zelaya was driven out of the country on June
28 after hooded and heavily-armed soldiers
seized him from bed at the presidential
palace and forced him into exile in Costa
Rica.
Aranda said that Honduran Foreign Minister
Patricia Rodas had not sought asylum in
Mexico even though she flew to the country
last week.
Mexico will continue to seek a solution, via
dialogue, coordination and not via violent
means to the crisis, Aranda added.
At least two people were killed and several
others injured in a conflict between
supporters of Zelaya and Honduran police
forces on Sunday when Zelaya's plane was
barred from landing in the capital of
Tegucigalpa.
A group of representatives from the Honduran
interim government traveled to Washington on
Monday to hold talks with the OAS in an
effort to seek a way out of the impasse.
