US Must Forgo Honduras Coup, Ortega
Managua - Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega
called on the White House to hold firm
against Honduras coup.
Ortega recalled that after two months as
president, Barack Obama suspended all form
of cooperation with the de facto government
in Madagascar. The least we can expect of
Obama is to act with the same firmness now,
he pointed out.
The Sandinista leader told pres that the
struggle against the coup continues, seeking
the reestablishment of constitutional order
through the return of President Manuel
Zelaya to complete his mandate.
He added that there is no possible
negotiation in the case of Honduras and that
in talks with OAS secretary general, Manuel
Insulza, he said that he was not confident
that any arrangement could be made with the
perpetrators of the coup and only hopes for
restitution of Zelaya.
He explained that after his visit to
Honduras Insulza will return to Washington
to an extraordinary meeting of the OAS today
where he will make a report.
If the authors of the coup abandon their
position and re-establish constitutional
order there will be no punishments, Ortega
explained but if there is no solution the
regional organization will decide what
sanctions to impose.
Ortega added that he talked with Zelaya
after his return from El Salvador where
president Mauricio Funes reiterated his
support.
He explained that Zelaya decided to return
to his country after evaluating the
important OAS meeting and his participation
in that meeting and later, perhaps on Sunday
he will return to Honduras.
Ortega criticized censorship of the mass
media in that neighboring country and has
not heard any condemnation of the
International Press Society. |
