Festival Kicks of In
Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz, Guanacaste,
yesterday began its
annual festival in
honour of the Santo
Cristo de de Esquipulas.
At noon, the sounds of
the firecrackers marked
the beginning of the
festivities that will
last all week.
The start of the Santa
Cruz festival was
delayed following a call
by Costa Rican president
for days of national
mourning for the victims
of the January 8
earthquake in Cinchona,
which also postponed the
opening of the Palmares
Festival, that is set to
commence this coming
Wednesday.
The traditional activity
of the "tope" took to
the streets of the small
town of Santa Cruz,
bringing together
hundreds of local
"cowboys".
The main objective of
the Santa Cruz festival
is to collect funds fo
the construction of a
sanctuary for the Santo
Cristo de Esquipulas,
the local patron saint. |
