Central America Holds
Extraordinary Meeting in
Nicaragua
Managua - Heads of state
and government from the
Central American
Integration System (SICA)
attended the 34th
extraordinary meeting of
the group in Nicaragua
on Thursday.
The meeting was hosted
by Nicaraguan President
Daniel Ortega, who
replaced Honduran
President Manuel Zelaya
as new temporary
president of SICA for a
six-month term.
Presidents and foreign
ministers from SICA
member states held a
closed door meeting at
Las Mercedes hotel, 11
km east of Managua, to
discuss such issues as
the world economy,
environment, education,
health and energy.
The meeting ended with a
Political Declaration
and the signing of a
Free Trade Agreement
between Nicaragua and
Panama.
Panamanian President
Martin Torrijos said
"this commercial
agreement reaffirms
Panama's expectation to
achieve a mechanism of
commerce and fair trade,
mainly by cooperation
tools."
The integration is an
effort for social and
economic development in
Central America, he
added.
The 33rd SICA meeting
was held in San Pedro
Sula, Honduras, on Dec.
5, 2008. |
