Laura Makes Her
Candidacy Official
It is official, former
vice-president, Laura
Chinchilla, is now a
contender for the
Partido Liberación
Nacional (PLN)
nomination for the 2010
presidential elections.
Chinchilla forgave the
"big" show planned in
making her announcement,
asking campaign workers
to hold a minute of
silence for the lost in
last week's earthquake,
before handing in her
formal inscription to
the leadership race.
Chinchilla will be
facing former security
minister, Fernando
Berrocal, San Jose
mayor, Johnny Araya and
Carlos Francisco
Echeverría, who all
handed in their formal
inscription earlier this
week.
The candidates will be
facing the PLN general
assembly on June 7 for
election.
Chinchilla is the front
runner and favourite to
take the nomination.
In an interview, doña
Laura rejected the
notion that she is an "Arista"
- a staunch supporter of
the Arias policies - and
she will be presenting
her own policies to
Costa Ricans, even
though the "Arismo" has
given much to the PLN
and Costa Rica.
