Weather Grounding Rescue
Efforts
Poor weather conditions
have grounded the rescue
and recovery efforts of
last Thursday's killer
earthquake. The constant
rain in the area of
Sarapiquí has meant that
the US and Colombian
helicopters have not
been able to fly to the
affected area, like
Cinchona, where the only
access in and out is by
air.
The poor weather
conditions has also
meant that ground rescue
and recovery crews have
been kept to a minimum,
in the hopes that today
the skies will clear and
the search for the eight
still missing can
continue.
Yesterday morning the
Colombian helicopter
crew took offer from the
base near Cinchona, to
take a look at the
weather conditions, but
was back at base within
minutes of liftoff.
Following the 6.2
earthquake as many as
125 people had been
reported missing. The
hard work of rescue
crews and the Organismo
de Investigación
Judicial (OIJ) reduced
the list, as agents
visited shelters,
reviewing videos and
personal interviews.
The total sum of the
tragedy is 23 dead and
eight persons missing.
