Re-election in Venezuela
Caracas - Followers of
Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez established
57,725 committees in
favor of a
Constitutional amendment
allowing for continuous
re-election in public
office.
Members of these
committees were
administered oath in
ceremonies countrywide,
including that held at
the Teresa Carreno
Theater, in Caracas, led
by Chavez, who urged
followers to remain
united around the
initiative.
"Union, union, or
anarchy will devour us,"
Chavez warned, while
urging the people to
exercise their right to
vote in the referendum
on the Constitutional
amendment likely to be
scheduled for February
15.
These pro-YES committees
are made up of members
of social programs and
movements, as well as
community councils and
other structures in
organized communities.
The initiative is part
of activities led by the
United Socialist Party
of Venezuela (PSUV) to
back the proposal put
forward by PSUV
legislators in the
National Assembly.
