Panamanian Workers
Protest For More Pay
Panama - A group of
workers from the Social
Security Cashbox (CSS)
of Panama on Wednesday
protested on the main
avenue of Panama city,
demanding higher pay.
They blocked the
Transistmica Avenue,
which links the center
with the east of the
city, for more than four
hours, according to
local media.
The general secretary of
the Association of
Officers and
administrators of the
CSS, Guillermo Gotti,
said that the protest
was to demand a salary
rise of 75 U.S. dollars
per month and a
productivity bonus to
compensate the high cost
of living.
The workers also urged
the government to raise
the quality of the
medicines that the CSS
gives to Panamanians
with social security,
and to improve their
working conditions.
The director of economic
affairs of the CSS,
Eduardo Carrasquilla,
responded that the
government does not have
the resources to satisfy
the demands of the
protestors.
The demonstrators said
they would continue the
protests until they
achieve their goal.
