Nicaragua 2008 Red Beans Exports End Up 10% At 59,202 Tons

Dow Jones - Nicaraguan exports of red beans in the calendar year 2008 rose 10% to end the year with total shipments at 59,202 metric tons, the Nicaraguan Export Statistics Center, Cetrex, said Friday.

This compares to January-December exports of 53,838 tons of beans in 2007, Cetrex said in its latest report on the local grains and livestock market, a copy of which was obtained by Dow Jones Newswires.

The value of the Central American nation's bean exports in 2008, however, more than doubled to $81.9 million from $40.3 million earned during 2007, Cetrex said.

Higher commodity prices were cited as the primary reason for the lower exports of red beans, which Nicaragua ships almost exclusively to neighboring El Salvador.

Nicaraguan exports of milk products were 48,683 tons in 2008, up 12% from the 43,411 tons shipped in the same period last year, Cetrex said.
The value of the milk products, mostly milk powder, rose 28% to $123.3 million in 2008 from $96.4 million the year before.

Nicaraguan exports of bovine meat, meanwhile, rose 6.7% to 64,484 tons during 2008 from exports of 60,453 tons in 2007, Cetrex said.

The value of bovine exports rose 17% to $215.1 million in the January-December period in 2008 from $183.5 million in 2007.
