Santiago - Ten prisoners
died and eight others were injured on Sunday
in a fire caused by a gang fight at a prison
outside Chile's capital, Santiago,
authorities said.
Fighting gangs turned over a stove in a room
connected to jail units 5, 6 and 7, which
house 25 convicts at the Penitentiary
Fulfillment Center, one of the largest jails
in Santiago, said Alejandro Jimenez,
director of the nation's armed police.
"There was no riot," he said, "it was a
clash between convicts which led to these
deaths and could be considered murder by
those who started the incident."
Jimenez said firefighters had the blaze
under control.
Armed police officers are working to
identify the dead, while around 100
relatives of those held in the facility have
gone to the jail seeking information about
their family members.
