Quito - Some 200
international observers Wednesday went to 24
provinces in Ecuador to supervise the
country's general elections which will start
on Sunday.
These observers, from the Organization of
American States (OAS) and the European Union
(EU), will supervise the opening of voting
stations, the voting process and the closing
and counting of votes at the Intermediate
Boards of Counting.
The general elections in Ecuador will select
the country's president, vice president, 124
assembly members, 221 mayors, 46 governors
and vice governors and 1,581 municipal
councilors.
The electoral campaign for the elections
began on Feb. 10 and must close on Thursday
midnight.
Omar Simons from the National Electoral
Council said everything was ready for the
elections and some 10.5 million Ecuadorans
have registered to vote.
The voting for non-sentenced prisoners will
begin on Friday.
Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa will seek
his reelection this time, and his main
rivals are former president Lucio Gutierrez
and four-time-candidate Alvaro Noboa.
