Correa is leading polls ahead of Sunday''s
general elections in Ecuador, with 50%
support, compared with 16% for former
President Lucio Gutierrez and 12% for banana
magnate Alvaro Noboa. Correa, who is seeking
reelection within a new institutional
framework, would win a first round of voting
on April 26, according to pollster Santiago
Perez Investigacion y Estudio.
His victory was corroborated by the Head of
States fellow supporters who have no doubt
of his victory in the coming Sunday's
elections.
Reelection will also allow Correa to get
deep into the process of changes called
Citizens Revolution and the implementation
of reforms to reduce increasing inequality.
Local analysts considered the victory would
be also favored by splitting right-wing
forces which are still fighting for votes.
Some 10 million Ecuadorians have been called
for Sunday's elections to elect the
President of the Republic and 118
legislators, 23 provincial civil governors
and 121 municipal mayors, among others
officials.
Correa took office in early 2007 for a
four-year term. A constitutional assembly
later wrote a new constitution for the
nation, which allowed Correa to call for new
elections and could also eventually allow
him to stay in office until 2017, following
more elections.
