Year
The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad
(ICE), the state agency that has held a
monopoly on telecommununications in Costa
Rica for more than 60 years until last fall,
will soon face stiff competition for
telephone services, data transfer and
internet.
Following the breaking of the
telecommunications monopoly and the creation
of the communications regulator, SUTEL, 19
companies have come forward seeking
permission to operate in Costa Rica.
All the companies have passed the first
phase of approval and are now in the process
of having the notice in the official
government publication, La Gaceta, and
national newspaper.
The SUTEL is to render a decision within two
months, that would see the start of
operations of Dodona SRL (Amnet), Intertel
Worldwide SA and Worldcom de Costa Rica SA,
among the contenders to provide
telecommunication services.
Amnet says it is interested in internet and
VoIP services, while Intertel pretends to
offer prepaid public telephone services,
also using voice over internet protocol, and
Worldcom wants to offer wide band and
wireless internet services. |
