Guatemalans Reject Journalist Killing

Guatemala - Different Guatemalan sectors expressed concern Thursday after the assassination of television journalist Rolando Santis, and demanded that authorities clarify this crime as soon as possible.

The Telecentro 13 station reporter was shot to death by two men riding motorcycles on a usually busy street in this capital's historic center.

Santis died instantly from bullet wounds and his cameraman Antonio De Leon was injured and is currently hospitalized.

Guatemalan Journalist Association Chair Carlos Enrique Wer condemned the assassination and called it a direct attack on journalists, and demanded that authorities arrest and try those responsible.

Santis was a good friend, an honest man and a great partner, and did his duty as a journalist up to the end, said Juan Carlos Lange, director of the television station.

Lange demanded that the government stop the wave of violence, which started with drivers and assistants of the transportation sector, and is now affecting journalists and public figures.

On behalf of the Executive, presidential spokespeople Fernando Barillas said he was constered by this event, which shows how the organized crime is attacking all sectors, he said.

This murder adds to that committed in 2008, against Jorge Merida, correspondent of Prensa Libre daily in Coatepeque municipality.
