GUATEMALA - Public
transportation workers
paralyzed their service
in eastern Guatemala
City to protest violence
leading to the deaths of
a driver and his
assístant on Friday.
The step is aimed to
demand from authorities
more protection for
drivers and passengers
by putting an end to
constant attacks,
extortion and killings.
More than fifty bus
drivers have been killed
so far this year, and
nearly all the cases are
still unresolved.
Most deaths have
occurred for their
refusal to give gang
members a so-called
circulation tax.
The gangs collect
thousands of dollars
every day from this
extortion to workers and
owners of vehicles in
the capital and nearby
municipalities.
According to the
Attorney General's
Office, the files on
these attacks will be
sent to the
International Commission
against Impunity in
Guatemala for their
investigation by foreign
experts. |
