Caracas Event Rethinks
Capitalism
CARACAS -An
international forum of
intellectuals in Caracas
will contribute to
consolidate an
alternative thought to
Capitalism which is
responsible for current
financial crisis,
Colombian historian
Renán Vega said.
Vega, also a writer and
a professor of the
Bogota National
Pedagogical University,
is one of the 200
thinkers attending the
7th World Meeting of
Intellectuals and
Artists in Defense of
Humanity and the General
Assembly of the World
Forum of Alternatives.
Interviewed by Prensa
Latina, Vega stated that
end-of-history
theoreticians have seen
their theories destroyed
by new social
alternatives arising
worldwide.
It is time for mankind
to take another
political road, so this
forum with experts from
50 countries should
serve for spreading
critical ideas against
the neoliberal system
that just advocate for
consuming goods, the
expert stressed.
"We have to optimize a
revision of the
historical
transformations, and
condemn economic models
propagating the use of
violence to eliminate
the political opponents
of the system of
capitalist
accumulation," he said.
"In that sense, Colombia
is a singular case. Our
delegation seeks to
denounce, among other
irregularities, the
continuous murders of
union leaders
representing 90 percent
of the world statistics
in Colombia," he added.
Vega, author and
compiler of the books
written by philosopher
Karl Marx, received the
Libertador al
Pensamiento Critico
Award in June on the
part of the Venezuelan
Ministry of Culture.
His winning
investigation, published
in 2007, rotated around
the world
transformations and its
incidence in social
sciences.
The Meeting of
Intellectuals and
Artists in Defense of
the Humanity and the
World Forum of
Alternatives gathered
sociologists and other
thinkers of the five
continents in Caracas,
who talked and analyzed
topics related with the
transition of the
socialism in the world.
One of the positive
teachings that has left
the current structural
crisis of the US
financial pattern, is
that a historical time
of exclusive hegemony of
neoliberalism in
America, has come to an
end, Vega pointed out.
However, the specialist
clarified that although
the crisis does not
still represent the
total agony of
capitalism, it offers
new perspectives to
those countries where
the social fellows want
to look for other
alternatives, different
to the imperialistic
pattern, he delimited.
Germany, United States,
Cuba, Belgium, Egypt,
Niger, China, India,
Malaysia, Viet Nam,
Brazil, Argentina,
Ecuador, Jamaica,
Mexico, and Nicaragua,
are some of the
countries represented in
the event.
