Opposition Candidates
Lead In Surveys For
Mayoral Elections In
Rio, Sao Paulo
RIO DE JANEIRO -
Candidates from the
opposition parties are
leading in the opinion
polls for the upcoming
second round of mayor
elections in Rio and Sao
Paulo, according to
surveys released
Thursday by consulting
company Datafolha.
In Sao Paulo, Gilberto
Kassab, candidate for
the opposition party
Democrats, netted a
17-point lead over Marta
Suplicy from the ruling
Worker's Party.
Kassab, who is running
for a re-election, had
54 percent of the voting
intentions among the
surveyed, while Suplicy
secured just 37 percent.
The survey had a margin
of error of two
percentage points.
Kassab led the first
round, but his lead over
Suplicy did not surpass
1 percent.
In Rio, candidate for
the Green Party Fernando
Gabeira won 43 percent
of the voting
intentions, while
Eduardo Paes, from the
Brazilian Democratic
Movement Party which is
allied with the ruling
party, had 41 percent.
As the survey had a
margin of error of three
percentage points, the
two candidates were
technically in a tie.
The second round of
mayor elections will
take place on Oct. 26.
