Guatemala Females
Protest Violence
Guatemala - Hundreds of
Guatemalan women and
girls marched on Tuesday
in the Historic Center
of Guatemala City to
demand the end of gender
violence in the country,
where 593 women have
been killed this year.
Under the slogan "For
the sake of women's
lives, no more deaths,"
the demonstrators
covered about nearly two
miles from the capital
municipality to the
Constitution Square.
On occasion of the
international day of no
violence against women,
representatives of
female organizations
exchanged the rose of
peace at the National
Culture Palace.
Leader Hilda Morales
said activities to raise
awareness on the scourge
will be carried out
countrywide until
December 10.
She considered an
important step to fight
impunity the
installation of a hot
line, promoted by the
Public Criminal Defense
Institute, for legal
consulting by victims.
This free of charge
service will run all day
with six operators
working shifts, three
lawyers and one
supervisor to handle
reports.
The service will be
supported by
Municipality and
Volunteer Fire
Departments, the
National Civil Police
and attorneys to help
the victims.
In January-October this
year, the Women
Assistance Program
registered 10,000 cases
of intrafamily violence.
