Lima - Street protests
and six people arrested
confirmed on Saturday
that outgoing US
President George W. Bush
is the most problematic
leader attending the
APEC Summit in Lima.
The arrested are 65-year
old Maria Martinez Barco
(in Lima) and five young
students in the city of
Trujillo, 354 miles
north of the capital.
The old woman was
arrested by security
forces near the
luxurious Marriot Hotel
as a suspect attacker
for carrying a knife in
her purse, though this
seems to be a result of
the tight security
paranoia surrounding
Bush.
She was crying her
innocence as passer-byes
booed officers who took
her to a police station
in a patrol car.
The incident took place
while Bush was meeting
with Chinese President
Hu Jintao, and
journalists are still
wondering how she was
able to get through the
iron ring of blocked
streets around the
hotel.
Chief of Miraflores
police station Vincenzo
Leva told journalists
that the woman had no
intention to attack Bush
and was only arrested
because of her
imprudence in carrying a
knife.
Also yesterday,
anti-terrorist police
forces in Trujillo
arrested five youngsters
who were painting
slogans rejecting Bush's
presence in Peru.
Bush arrived in Lima on
Friday amid protests by
political and social
organizations in main
Dos de Mayo Square.
