Colombia Wins Several APEC Economies' Backing of Membership Bid
Lima -  Colombia has won the backing of several APEC member economies for its membership bid, Colombian Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez said Saturday.

Colombia's bid has won the support from such members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum as the United States, China, Japan, Russia and Peru, Peru's official Andina news agency quoted Bermudez as saying.

Bermudez, however, was cautious about a possible consensus among the 21 member economies, saying "we still have much work to do."

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe was in Peru for the annual APEC Leaders' Week on Nov. 16-23 though the country is not a member of the bloc.

Chile, Mexico and Peru are the only Latin American members of APEC, and the group has said it would not consider new membership until 2010.
