Expansion Starts Next

The long awaited
expansion of the road
between MAG and the
Universal in La Sabana
is expected to begin
next week and to last 20
months.
The Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes (MOPT)
announced that work
crews will begin
clearing the way for the
expansion that will see
the congested two lane
road on the south side
of the Sabana park.
The Radial MAG-Universal,
as it is being called,
will become four lanes
and will be built of
concrete - the third
such work being carried
out in San Jose - a
material that is more
resistant to heavy
traffic. Asphalt can be
as durable as concrete,
if only the quality of
the material were
improved, according to
MOPT engineers.
The work is complex as
it entails having to
install a new sewer
system, move electrical
utility poles and allow
for traffic flow at the
same time.
The ministra de Obras
Públicas y Transportes,
Karla González, said
that the timing will
depend on the work
progres of the
Acueductos y
Alcantarillados (AyA) -
water and sewer utility,
the Compañía Nacional de
Fuerza y Luz (CNFL) -
eletrical services, and
the Instituto
Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) -
telephones.
In January the road will
have to be closed to
lift the existing
pavement, when the MOPT
is expected to have a
detour plan in place to
minimize traffic
congestion in the
surrounding areas.
