Universal On The
Expansion
The Universal department
store chain is on the
expansion as it plans to
open four more stores by
2010, bringing the total
number of stores in the
chain to 14.
The Universal has been
around for some 82
years, developing into a
full department store
from a small book store
in 1926. the most
notable stores are the
ones located on Avenida
1, on the pedestrian
boulevard and its
colours window displays
and the store diagonal
to the northeast corner
of the Sabana park.
The retailer calls
itself "Una Cadena de
Tiendas de Conveniencia"
(a convenience store
chain). The chain's
merchanside mix is not
as complete or as large
as the Hipermas or
Pricesmart, catering to
an select upper scale
clientele.
The latest Universal
just opened in
Multicentro in
Desamparados just in
time for the Christmas
shopping season. The
chain also has stores in
Escazú, Cartago and
Alajuela. |
