Guatemala's Colom Visits Rain-Hit Areas
Guatemala President Alvaro Colom visited rain-hit areas over the weekend.

He toured communities in Pailon municipality of Escuintla department, where landslides and rockslides killed one person and damaged 41 houses.

He promised assistance to the victims, saying that a commission of the Guatemalan Housing Fund will be sent to the area to assess damages and material needed to rebuild houses.

Colom urged residents to abandon the risk areas temporarily and go to shelters, as rain will continue, according to weather forecast.

There are at least 2,000 risk areas, mainly in departments of Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, San Marcos, Solola, Huehuetenango and the southern coast, the National Disaster Reduction Coordination of Guatemala said.
