Earthquake Shakes Costa Rica's
Southern Zone
More than 50 earthquakes
have been registered in
the country's southern
zone, with at least 21
houses damaged, when the
first rumble hit at
9:01am Monday,
registering 5.6 on the
Richter scale.
The epicentre was
located 37 kilometres
south of Laurel de
Corredores near the
Panama border.
Of the 21 house damaged,
4 were destroyed
completely and as well
two schools, the Caracol
de la vaca and Santa
Lucía de Laurel, were
also damaged.
In Cuidad Neilly
authorities forced the
evacuation of the Tomás
Casas hospital and
according to officials
of the Caja
Costarricense del Seguro
Social (CCSS), the
hopsital received some
structural damage.
A total of 21 patients
had to be moved to other
medical centres in the
area.
According to the
Obvservatorio
Vulcanológico y
Sismológico de Costa
Rica (OVSICORI) caused
much damage due to low
depth.
Mario Protti of the
OVISCORI said that
people should not panic
because the earth keeps
shaking, only in cases
where they note
structural damage in
their homes or places of
work.
According to Protti
yesterday's earthquake
originated from the
point that registered
the earthquake of 25
December 2003, a quake
that keep area residents
vigil for several days.
Protti added that it
isn't unusual that
aftershocks will
continue during this
