Arias To Get Medical Treatment In The US
Costa Rican president, Óscar Arias Sánchez, who has been suffering for the last two weeks of severe dysphonia, will be travelling to the United States to get medical treatment, according to a note Arias sent to the Legislative Assembly explaining the reasons for his having to leave the country.

Dysphonia is the medical term for hoarseness or other phonation disorders. It is considered much less severe than aphonia.

While Arias is away, vice-president, Laura Chinchilla, will head the government until Arias returns.

Arias has been under medical attention by doctor Mauricio Buitrago of the Clínica Bíblica, who ordered the president to rest and forced to cancel his appearance at a number of official public functions like the recent presidential summit in Peru.

Arias has been keeping in touch with his ministers and advisors by email and has delegated a number of his functions to key government officials.

No details were given on the treatment he is to receive in the US nor the length of his absence.
