Violent Deaths Paint The Country Red
2008 has been a violent year so far, as 117 people were murdered in the first fours months, compared to the same number of murders in the first eight months of 2007.

The high number of murders if leaving many insecure, although the government is saying the opposite, that residents should feel more secure with the added number of police on the streets and additional judicial investigators.

The statistics are maintained by the Organismo de investigación Judicial (OIJ - judicial investigative authority - who say that at least 8 of the murders were by "sicariato" (hired killings), 24 resulting from domestic violence, 37 a settling a scores, 12 deaths occurring during an assault and 7 cases were in self defense.

In the rest of the murders the OIJ said it has yet to determine the motive.
