Drought Affecting
Northern Zone
Twelve communities of
the Los Chiles, the
northwest area of the
country, is being
seriously affected by
drought, as 70% of the
bean production has been
lost and animals are
dying.
Crisis is the world
being used by the
residents of the 12
communities which have
been facing drought
conditions since January
when they haven't seen
practically a drop of
water.
Los Chiles mayor,
Santiago Millon, said
that they are evaluating
if they should ask the
government to declare
the area a state of
emergency.
Millon said that 70% of
the bean harvest has
been lost already,
representing 50.000
quintals to producers,
leaving them with only
14.000 quintals to
market.
Millon added that the
drought is placing rice
production in danger as
well.
One of the growers
affected by the drought,
Roger Murillo, said that
he and many of the other
growers are want to
plant rice and corn, but
are not sure as they
don't know climatic
conditions.
Some 150 livestock have
also died during the
drought.
