Costa Ricans To Have New
Cedulas Soon
A decision by the Sala
IV or Constitutional
Court obligates the
Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE) to
provide cedulas that can
also be used by the
blind. The TSE will, in
the coming months,
provide the blind with a
cedula with different
characteristics than the
current.
At the root of the
change is the concern by
the blind and who have
asked the TSE for some
way for them to be able
to read the cedula.
The Tribunal says it has
accepted the court's
decision and had decided
to make a complete
change of all cedulas
and not only to cedulas
issued to the blind.
Cedulas are typically
good for ten years. TSE
officials say that the
cedulas should change
every 3 or 4 years, but
due to lack of financial
resources, it opted for
the longer term.
However, now, finances
or not, the court order
is forcing the TSE to
make the change.
