U.S. Compensates Costa
Rica For Cutting Off
Access To Online
Gambling Customers
In exchange for cutting
off the Costa Rica's
access to online
gambling customers, the
United States has offer
Costa Rica greater
access to other service
markets like research
and development and
technical testing and
analysis.
The move is part of a
settlement between the
U.S. and Costa Rica
after the U.S. enacted
laws targeting online
gambling.
Similar agreements were
reached between the
U.S., Canada, Japan and
the European Union.
Costa Rican foreign
trade minister, Marco
Ruiz, said that the
agreement was
satisfactory.
The settlement came
after Costa Rica filed
for arbitration with the
World Trade Organization
(WTO), which ruled that
a country that blocks
access to markets must
provide compensation to
the affected countries.
