El Salvador: Volcano
Control Device
El Salvador has been
equipped with a modern
gases emission
monitoring equipment in
two of its active
volcanoes as part of a
regional project that
includes other Latin
American countries,
confirmed official
sources Thursday.
A government group noted
the device, made up of
differential absorption
optical spectrometers, a
scanner that works in
ultraviolet wavelength
and is used to detect
sulfur dioxide
emissions.
The equipment was
installed by the
National Territorial
Research Service (SNET)
in the Ilamatepec
volcano, 37 miles west
of this capital and in
Chaparratique, 80 miles
east.
The measure joins the
project called
Observation Network of
Volcanoes and Climate
Changes (SNET) that is
taking place in some
Latin American
countries.
According to SNET the
regional project
strengthens supervision
of volcanic gasses that
will permit, in possible
cases of eruption, to
issue an early alert.
In Central America, the
monitoring stations of
Guatemala, Costa Rica
and Nicaragua volcanoes
also join this network.
