Veranillo De San Juan
Starts This Weekend
Good news for those
heading to the beaches
and resorts next week,
or even for those
staying close to home,
the "Veranillo de San
Juan" (summer solstice)
begins on June 20, says
the Instituto
Meteorológico Nacional (IMN)
- national weather
service.
According to the IMN
around that date begins
the mid rainy season
summer weather,
especially for the area
of Guanacaste.
The Veranillo is due to
last to the 25th in
Guanacaste and the 24th
in the Central Valley.
The Veranillo is usually
a period of light winds,
little rain and lots of
sunshine. The IMN warns,
however, that that could
all be different this
year due to global
climatic changes.
Solstices occur twice a
year, when the tilt of
the Earth's axis is
oriented directly
towards or away from the
Sun, causing the Sun to
reach its northernmost
and southernmost
extremes.
The name is derived from
the Latin sol (sun) and
sistere (to stand
still), because at the
solstices, the Sun
stands still in
declination; that is,
its apparent movement
north or south comes to
a standstill.. |
