Cancer A Week in Zarcero
Without a dispute, the
small communitu of
Zarcero, west of San
José, has the highest
rate of breast cancer in
the country, with an
average of 2 women
diagnosed every week.
Zarcero is a small town
of 11.000 and the
results are alarming.
Medical authorities in
the area theorize three
possible threats: lack
of information about
breast cancer among the
women in the town,
contaminated water and
heredity.
Making matters worse is
that the local clinic,
the Alfaro Ruiz, does
not count with its own
mammograph. In fact the
entire area of San
Carlos, Zarcero, Naranjo
and Sarchí does not have
a mammograph and
residents have to visit
the clinic in San Ramón
for an exam.
