Colombia, Ecuador Meet
in US
The deputy foreign
ministers of Ecuador,
Jose Valencia, and
Colombia, Camilo Reyes,
are meeting Monday in
Washington to strengthen
their flagging
relations.
The forum takes place at
the headquarters of the
Organization of American
States (OAS), with the
mediation of that
regional group, after
the two sides agreed to
resume mutual ties last
week.
This is the fourth
meeting since the
bilateral crisis
emerged, and Valencia
and Reyes plan to
analyze mechanisms to
coordinate border
security, the
application of justice
in the bordering zone,
and the compensation
issue.
The Ecuadorian
chancellery calls for
the creation of an
arbitration commission
to solve the
compensation issue, due
to the damages caused by
the Colombian conflict
in Ecuadorian territory.
According to Valencia,
there is a file
containing nine cases of
nationals killed in
incidents with Colombian
troops that have not
been resolved.
In addition, Colombia
has been requested to
compensate for the March
1 bombing of a northern
Ecuadorian zone.
The Bogota government
refuses to pay for the
damages caused by that
last operation, which is
considered by Ecuador
and South American
nations a violation of
Ecuadorian sovereignty.
