Peru President for
Energy Sales to Chile
Peruvian President Alan
Garcia tried to
neutralize the
opposition to his idea
of selling energy to
Chile Friday, and stated
that Chile might get
upset and stop buying
Peruvian products if the
supply did not come.
Garcia gave this
argument after almost
all the experts in the
topic were against his
proposal that Chile
should be supplied with
electric power produced
in thermo electric
plants, instead of
natural gas.
Garcia said the Peruvian
negative to give Chile
energy might cause the
expulsion of Peruvian
émigrés who live in
Chile, a country buying
Peruvian products for a
billion dollars.
He also said that
opposition parties
should make proposals on
the use of gas and
energy, and not say that
some products should not
be sold to Chile.
He particularly talked
about conservative
Popular Christian Party
(PPC) leader Lourdes
Flores, who modified her
position on the topic
and joined the
opposition to the supply
to Chile.
Peruvian Energy and
Mining Juan Valdivia had
stated before Garcia's
statement that if Peru
exports electric energy
to Chile, it should be
produced by
hydroelectric plants, to
take care of the gas
reserves, and Engineers
College Dean Carlos
Herrera coincided with
his opinion.
Garcia looked down on
the high disagreement to
his administration in
the south and east of
the country despite its
upturn in the polls in
Lima and other places.
