Ecuador: Confidence with
Colombia still Missing
Resumption of diplomatic
links of Ecuador with
Colombia constitute a
step forward in the
solution of the
bilateral crisis, which
will be overcome with
the recovery of
confidence between both
governments, Ecuadorian
Foreign Minister Maria
Isabel Salvador said.
Her remarks were made
while announcing Quito
readiness to resume
relations with Bogota,
broken in the wake of
the Colombian bombing of
an Ecuadorian northern
area on March 1st.
"We can resume
relations, but the
problem does not end
there; loss of
confidence is the
fundamental thing here,"
Salvador told local
media.
She explained that the
opening of contacts at
the level of charge d'
affaires does not solve
the problem, but
facilitates
communication and
information exchange.
The Ecuadorian Foreign
minister did not rule
out a meeting with her
Colombian peer Fernando
Araujo, but when no
progress is made in
current talks or to make
final decisions.
She confirmed that the
deputy Foreign ministers
of both nations will
meet in Washington on
Tuesday, and Ecuador
will demand compensation
for damages caused by
the bombing.
If no agreement is
reached, "we will resort
to other instances to
demand compensation,"
stressed Salvador. |
