Interamericana Sur Will
Not Re-Open This Week As
Announced
The Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes (MOPT),
had hoped to re-open the
Interamericana Sur on
Tuesday. However, that
will not be the case, as
work is moving slowly
through the area and
drivers have to resort
to the Costanera, the
only alternate route
between San Jose and the
Southern Zone.
Alma destroyed a portion
of the highway between
kilometres 99 and 120 in
the area known as Cerro
de la Muerte and
although MOPT work crews
have been able to clear
most of the 15
landslides along the
affected area and
re-opened, though
partially passage on
those spots, it has not
been able to fill the
washed away portion of
the road.
The Costanera between
Quepos and Dominical, a
40 kilometre stretch of
rocky road that takes up
to two hours to travel
through, is now filled
with passenger vehicles
and big trucks, making
things even worse.
The MOPT says it has
made some improvements
to that stretch of road.
In Pérez Zeledón, one of
the hardest areas hit by
Alma, 10 communities
still remain isolated.
MOPT officials cannot
say when the
Interamericana Sur will
re-open completely, for
now they are only
allowing ambulances and
work machinery through
the area. |
