Colombian Lawmakers Seek
Severe Punishment On
Crimes Against Children
Colombian parliament
members have launched a
campaign to collect
200,000 signatures in
support of a referendum
on imposing life
imprisonment on
perpetrators of crimes
against children.
The legislators are
expected to send their
request to the Colombian
Congress before the end
of this year.
According to the UN
Children's Fund
(UNICEF), at least
35,000 children are
sexually exploited in
Colombia through
pornography, sexual
tourism and slavish
marriages.
The initiative aims to
modify article 34 of the
Constitution to allow
penal servitude for
life.
Colombian children not
only face sexual abuse,
but are also subject to
forcible conscription
into armed groups.
