Guatemala Declares
"State of Emergency" In
25 Municipalities
The Guatemalan
government on Monday
declared a "state of
emergency" in 25
municipalities following
widespread damage caused
by torrential rain,
according to news
reaching here from
Guatemala City.
The "state of emergency"
will help authorities
deal with the material
and human damage caused
by the rain, said the
director of the National
Coordinator for Disaster
Reduction.
The decree will allow
the Guatemalan
government to
immediately mobilize
some 6 million U.S.
dollars to help
thousands of victims.
Recent downpours have
killed 60 people around
the country and have
caused damages worth
millions of dollars to
agriculture and
infrastructure.
